Cabinet approves new toll bill
Cabinet has approved a new bill that will allow government to take action in civil courts against people who dodge e-tolls.
The Transport Laws and Related Matters Amendment bill was approved by Cabinet in anticipation of the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project, which has been halted.
Toll evaders could face garnishment orders against their pay slips or attachment of their property if they refuse to pay fees or fines.
"The bill has been necessitated by the development of the GFIP, as well as future plans for the development of road infrastructure," government spokesman Jimmy Manyi was quoted as saying.
"The bill is essential to enable the implementation of the electronic toll collection system," he said.
On April 28, the High Court in Pretoria handed down an order preventing the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) from levying or collecting e-tolls pending the outcome of a judicial review.
The court will hear arguments in the e-toll case on November 26.

Maybe the Queens language is getting too difficult to understand for me lately. Can someone explain to me, what does dodging mean? "...to take civil action against people who dodge e-tolls". My understanding of dodging is 'avoiding to use in an unscrupulous way or with negative motives'. How are they going to measure if I was dodging or that I just decided to use a different route to get to my destination? It's about time these fat-cat idiots from Sanral and the government get real and admit that they bungled up and they must take resposibility.Report Abuse
