Sowetan there is a fact missing on this report. Why was the doctor who is less experienced in charge of the patient who is not doing well post operatively ? The legal representative for the family , the report about patients is written in retrospect, no time to write report while resuscitating. There should have been someone to keep record of resuscitation but the departments are less staffed because of corruption, no money to pay extra shift. There is what is called skill mix, as nurse Sibongile is a junior sister, who was cocordinating that shift. I do not defend nurses but IT IS HIGH TIME THAT CONSULTANTS ARE STOPPED BEING ON CALL FROM HOME. If this patient needed constant supervision , the doctor should have made a follow up as well, nurses are not working for doctors, they should also do rounds at night. Nurses are not off the hook here, what's wrong with nurses with high heels , long nails and long sleeves on duty ? WRONG !!! In the so called Western countries nurses put on hospital uniform, period , same should be done in South Africa. Showing off with their epaulettes in pick'n pay , shoprite checkers, etc is disgusting.
Now department of health, there should be a cardiac arrest button which Sibongile must have pulled, the fact is , has the nurse been updated about what to do in cardiac/ respiratory arrest. Updating on what to do in an arrest should be updated anually. There should be a hospital cardiac arrest team, and an outreach team to keep progress of these type of patients. Hoping that nurses were not resuscitating alone waiting for on call doctor to come from home, stucked in a traffic. If South Africa wants to implement NI, we better focus more on restructuring our health system.

This hospital is just another death trap. I was admitted into hospital after a c-section that went crazy for about 5-6 mothers that used a particular theatre as there was bacteria. I had acute septicaemia 7 days after the birth of my child.
As if that was not enough, the doctor told the nurse to give me pennicillin as an antibiotic and yet i was wearing a yellow band to alert him of any allergy and the damn medicine was written in bold on the band. Fortunately, i always ask what medicine is being given to me.
There is so much gross negligence at this hospital and they behave as if they are doing you a favour rather than doing a job that they are supposed to be passionate about.

A few hours later, after the allegedly botched operation at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg
The court heard that she elected to sit at the nursing station and observe the two from there.
She said she did not make follow-up readings because there was no cause for concern about Nkosi's condition when she examined him.

@Bloggers good morning

@Sowetan, Stanley Nkosi died in July 2008

I personally know the Nkosi family. The sad this is that Stan was supposed to have his operation done at a private hospital but opted to go to the Folateng ("private wing of Charlotte Maxheke hospital). Nurse Sibongile is lying when she says she feel ill after Stan died hence she did not complete the report. The report was done a week after Stan's death when the family when the family was doing a follow up about the inquest.

Unbeknown to the hospital staff was (is) that both his son and daughter in-law are medical doctors and when they went to the hospital to get the request is was thent that it was completeted (in front of them) under the guise of "making notes".

The hospital management, health department and the health porfessional in question were unco-operative, that is why the family decided to sue.

Morning my blog sister

Thank God that you survived.

When I had my baby (by C-section), post-op my BP dropped to a dangerous low. I was fortunate that I was in a private hospital and instead of the 30 minute interval to check vitals mine was done every 5 minutes. When I look back, I count my blessings that I can afford provate healthcare because is that would have happened in a public hospital I was been a goner.........
