ANC must cleanse itself: Zuma
The ANC must reflect on its character and "cleanse" itself at its four-day policy conference, President Jacob Zuma said.
"To maintain its character, the ANC should be able to cleanse itself of alien tendencies," Zuma told delegates in Midrand, to a smattering of applause.
These tendencies included ill-discipline, patronage, careerism, corruption, abuse of power and a decline in the ideological depth of ANC members.
Zuma said the party had "taken action, and will continue to take action against anyone who crosses the line".
He said the conference provided an opportunity to reflect on the party's character.
The party's character was that of a disciplined force of the left, with a bias towards the poor and working class.
"The ANC has been the voice of the poor and the marginalised since its inception in 1912."
Zuma called on the ANC to engage in a fruitful debate, particularly on organisational renewal. The ANC must underscore the values of unity, honesty, discipline, hard work, constructive criticism and mutual respect, he added.

So yesterday was cold n I stayed snuggling at home and happened to watch Talk To Al Jazeera, where they interview Joyce Banda (the Malawi President). I was so impressed listening to that woman and I wondered if our president could speak something that makes sense, from the head. I just listened on the radio where President By Accident poorly read a speech, my God, can these ANC people save us from this pain they inflicted to the nationReport Abuse

The only way for the ANC to cleanse itself is for Zuma to resign. There's no shower in the world that cleanse the damage you've done to the ANC and South Africa.Report Abuse

How will the ANC clean itself?? I sugest: leaders of ANC must be qualified people in areas which they are assigned to, be vetted and their personal track records be examined etc. In other words, the leaders of the ANC must first be successful in other areas of life. Why? Most leaders of ANC are people who failed eslwhere in life, they could not have any other career, they were either jobless or had poorly paying jobs such as teaching etc. They joined ANC out of desperation to make a living income and finally wealth!! In short, they are not leaders at all, they are hungry people for income and wealth. They only pretend to be leaders because that is how they shall be placed into positions where they can make money - legally and illegally. It is about themselves and not the country. But make no mistake, the previous generation of ANC were mostly true leaders who had the country at heart: Mandelas, Susulus etc. because they led in dangerous circumstances without any promise of personal wealth!!Report Abuse
