IN AN ATTEMPT to cure the stagnant enrolment and high failure rate in the humanities and social sciences at universities, the government plans to establish an institute that will encourage academics in the field to network, share information and undertake research.

We realy do need that in RSA thanks Minister Nzimande, Government must be ready for implementations as well, researchers cant be conducting participatory rural appraisal to identify problems in rural areas without results, we are done with appraisals and planning raising expectations from rural people now RSA Government should solve the problems, we need results.Report Abuse

The problems are many: large classes, understaffed (academic) programmes, poorly qualified staff, poorly run departments, high failure rates, poor resources, limited access to computer laboratories and unsupportive library systems."++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
While the idea of an institute is welcome, many problems stated herein seem to be more on the ground and linked directly to poor management. Starting point could be to manage students intake, employ qualified staff and upskill existing ones, put underperforming managers to terms, procure resources, increase/equip computer labs and upgrade library systems

@Blackstone.LebsI think with intervention from the government it will be useful to the country, because the social researchers will be doing research for the government, they will identify specific problems and gaps and give recommendations for gov, research will no longer be for completing studies but to make a change in our country.............nna kere thumbs up............
