North West is the first province to come out in support of Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma to lead the ANC.
Dlamini-Zuma has so far been endorsed by the ANC Youth League and the ANC Women’s League.
Over the weekend, the province held its provincial general council, where it agreed on the Dlamini-Zuma slate which includes Mpumalanga leader David Mabuza as her deputy.
The province agreed it would back her to succeed President Jacob Zuma as ANC leader.
Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa already has the support of Northern Cape and Limpopo.

Yesterday, Dlamini-Zuma was campaigning in the Sekhukhune region in Limpopo. She warned that SA was at risk of falling into conflict and becoming like other African nations where there is strife. “If we continue to build an army of unemployed young people and continue to have poor people there will be no peace in SA.”
She said the road to radical economic transformation would be tough, adding that it would succeed only if women and the youth are empowered. She drew from her experience as the former African Union Commission chairwoman, saying many countries fell into conflict because of tribalism and economic problems.
ANCWL president Bathabile Dlamini said Dlamini-Zuma was ready to lead and work with those who want to see progress in SA. “Now is the time for you to vote for a tried and tested cadre of the ANC.”
She said there were people who had declared Sekhukhune as a no-go area for Dlamini-Zuma’s campaign. “Where there is ANC there can [not] be a no-go zone.”
ANCYL president Collen Maine said SA was ready for a female president. “The youth league has spoken, they want NDZ. People must not go around spreading lies that we do not want her as president.”
Maine said she would bring an end to inequality, unemployment and hunger.
Meanwhile Mpumalanga chairman of the house of traditional leaders, King Sandile Ngomane, has called for the future president of the ANC to give Mabuza a position.
Ngomane, chief Hhoyi II near Mbuzini, was speaking during a Hhoyi traditional authority ummemo on Saturday.
He said he supported Mabuza because he treated traditional leaders well.
The gathering, attended by Deputy Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Obed Bapela and Swaziland minister of home affairs Tsandziwe Dlamini, saw the kings and chiefs of Mpumalanga and over 10000 people descend on KaHhoyi village.
“There is no [leader in] provinces that supports traditional leaders like Mabuza. He has given us tractors to plough our land for food, we would like to appreciate that. As traditional leaders in Mpumalanga we are saying, whoever is going to be president must give Mabuza a position,” said Ngomane.
