Co-accused points at his accomplice

One of the three suspects accused of kidnapping 14-month-old baby Siyabonga during a house robbery in Protea Glen, Soweto, in 2016, has admitted to robbery at the house but claimed to not have had a hand in the kidnapping.

This came out yesterday in the Protea Magistrate's Court where, through an affidavit, Thokozani Mpanza admitted to being at the scene of the crime on the day of the robbery and kidnapping of Siyabonga.

Thokozani, along with Nompilo Mpanza and Xolani Ntshingila, stand accused of kidnapping and robbery with aggravated circumstances relating to the kidnapping of the then 14-month-old baby from his home in Protea Glen.

The baby was found in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, a few days later.

While leading evidence, Thokozani's lawyer, Andrew Malumane, put it to Siyabonga's mother Mandisa Mlambo that his client had no hand in the kidnapping but was simply at her house to carry out the robbery.

Mlambo took the stand on Tuesday where she relived the horror of the night of her child's kidnapping.

"I put it to you that my client said he did not take your child from you, but the child was taken by accused 1 (Ntshingila) who had his face covered with a balaclava," he said.

The 29-year-old Mlambo told the court that indeed Thokozani had not taken her child from her.

"My client further told me that his main purpose and the part that he played was to take money from you, and not take your child," Malumane said.

Thokozani shifted the blame to his co-accused, Nompilo and Ntshingila.

Nompilo is said to be the mastermind behind the robbery and kidnapping and was the baby's nanny.

It is alleged the crime was an act of revenge by Nompilo against the father's child.

She was apprehended after investigating officers from Protea police station questioned her and the mother separately a few days after the crime.

The officers noticed discrepancies in Nompilo's version of events.

The matter was postponed to December 4 when four witnesses from KwaZulu-Natal are expected to take the stand.
