Soccer raises R1 million for children of slain military officers

Football’s premier league has made a R1 million donation to an educational trust set up to help the dependents of South African National Defence Force members who died in the line of duty.

Premier Soccer League (PSL) chairperson Irvin Khoza presented the cash injection for the SANDF Education Trust Fund to the chief of the South African National Defence Force‚ General Solly Shoke‚ the military said in a statement on Tuesday. The ceremony was held in Sandton recently.

The trust is funded through donations and contributions received from the private sector. The SANDF statemetn read: “Ongoing fund raising is taking place and all citizens are given an opportunity to contribute to this noble cause. No State funds are used to support the Trust.”

Bursaries and scholarships for study purposes‚ depending on eligibility‚ are awarded to the dependents of SANDF members killed or severely injured subsequent to 27 April 1994 whilst on official duties‚ and civilian members of the Department of Defence killed or severely injured whilst deployed in operations with the SANDF.

So far 89 bursaries have been awarded.
