Sanac says it is addressing civil society concerns

The board of the SA National Aids Council (Sanac) said on Thursday it was addressing concerns raised by civil society groups.

“However we wish to note that Sanac’s recent unqualified audit gives the Trustees confidence in the performance‚ management and administration of the Trust. Sanac values continuous engagement and thoughtful feedback and hopes that it will provide the impetus to work towards the full implementation of the National Strategic Plan‚” it said in a statement.

“The Board of Trustees urges all stakeholders to raise their concerns within Sanac structures and continue to play a meaningful role within Sanac to ensure that we meet our NDP obligation of a generation free of HIV by 2030.”

Activists protest against Aids CouncilActivists protested against the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) at the opening of the South African AIDS Conference in Durban on Tuesday. They held placards reading: “No confidence in SANAC”.

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC)‚ SECTION27‚ the Legal Resources Centre (LRC)‚ Masithandane End-Hate Crimes Collective and the Rural Health Advocacy Project (RHAP) earlier this week threatened to withdraw from Sanac‚ saying that the council faced a “crisis of governance and legitimacy”.

The organisations took issue with the targets contained in the National Strategic Plan (NSP) on HIV and TB for 2017 to 2022 and accused Sanac of failing to provide leadership.

They also highlighted possible financial conflicts of interest among Sanac board members as well as a lack of transparency on the recent resignation of two board members.
