Double life sentence for Kimberley man who raped‚ strangled‚ stabbed and bit girlfriend

When police found Margaret Olyne she had been raped‚ stabbed‚ strangled and there were bite marks on her face‚ torso‚ arm and back.

On Friday the 25-year-old’s boyfriend‚ Simon Zuba‚ was given a double life sentence in the Northern Cape High Court.

The sentencing comes as South Africans have had to deal with a wave of violent attacks on women‚ including that of Karabo Mokoena‚ whose body was burnt allegedly by her boyfriend.

The attack on Olyne took place about three and a half years ago in Kimberley.

The 38-year-old was arrested the same day as the attack.

According to a police statement‚ issued after the sentencing‚ Zuba and Olyne lived together on a farm where he was a general worker.

Acting provincial police commissioner Major General Koliswa Otola said: “The convictions result in justice for the victims and the community feels safer when the perpetrators are incarcerated.

“It also sends out a stern message that crimes and violence against women and children will not be tolerated.’’

He made special mention of Detect Warrant Officer Desmond Markgraaff for ‘’brilliant’’ investigative work.
