SABC interim board has suspended its own payments to ensure staff receive salaries, Tsedu tells Scopa

The SABC is in a difficult financial crisis but will do everything it can to make sure staff is paid at the end of the month, the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) heard on Wednesday.

Interim deputy SABC Board chairman, Mathatha Tsedu told Scopa that they are using what is called 'the principle of a waterfall' to determine who gets paid first.

"It depends on where you are in that waterfall whether you are going to be paid or not. So on top of that waterfall, it's our staff. And we make a commitment here, we've made this commitment in the previous months that no matter what happens, our staff will be paid," said Tsedu.

The interim board is briefing the committee on outstanding issues related to irregular expenditure at the national broadcaster.

Hlaudi's 90% rule threatens the existence of the SABC, Scopa hears

Tsedu said that the interim board took a decision to suspend it's own payments until the SABC is in sound financial status.

"We in continuous discussions with a whole lot of other service providers where we limp from one day to another, from one negotiation to another in trying to ensure that content is supplied by people we haven't even paid.

"To that extent, this board took a decision that it's own board payments will be suspended in total until such time that the financial situation of the SABC has been regularised. That's how seriously we're looking at this thing," said Tsedu assuring the committee that staff will be paid.

SAFM tweeted that Communications Minister Ayanda Dlodlo announced that James Aguma is no longer SABC's acting CEO.

Tsedu clarified that Tseliso Ralitabo was appointed acting CEO as Aguma is off sick.
