Three supposed security guards were killed in hail of gunfire in Himalaya’s Road in Merebank‚ south Durban‚ on Tuesday night‚ with suspicions that the killings are linked to taxi violence.

The trio‚ who themselves were heavily armed‚ are understood to have been providing security for a Durban taxi association.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said that officers had arrived at the scene of the shooting to find a bullet-riddled car at the roadside.

“They noticed a beige Toyota Corolla which was off the road on the grass path along Himalaya’s Road. The vehicle had several gunshot holes and windows were shattered‚” she said.

“Inside the vehicle there were three occupants‚ the driver who was wearing civilian clothes and two passengers who were seated at the back seat wearing a security company uniform‚” Gwala added.

She said that the men who died in the back of the car had both been holding rifles.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown. Three counts of murder and two counts of attempted murder were opened at Wentworth police station for investigation‚” said.

No arrests have been made.
