Motorist who shot hijacker dead 'saved by his spare firearm magazine'

A Cape Town motorist returned fire during an attempted car hijacking and killed one of his four attackers‚ the City of Cape Town law enforcement division reported on Saturday.

The motorist was lucky to escape unharmed despite coming under heavy fire while driving in Manenberg. At least one of the attackers’ bullets struck his spare firearm magazine which saved him from serious injury‚ according to the city’s law enforcement head‚ Wayne Dyason.

“He was extremely lucky. He had the presence of mind to defend himself and to shoot accurately‚” Dyason said.

Dyason said police officers were quickly on the scene after hearing bursts of gunfire. They found one of the suspected assailants lying on the ground with fatal gunshot wounds. He died on the scene.

Police could not immediately confirm the incident.
