Suspects probed for Gauteng bomb threats want their equipment returned

Three people investigated in connection with bomb threats made at different shopping centres late last year have turned to the Johannesburg High Court to force the police to return electronic equipment they confiscated from them.

The equipment includes computers‚ USB devices‚ memory cards and cellphones.

The three alleged suspects sought an order to declare a search warrant used on April 2 to confiscate the items set aside and their property returned.

They brought the matter before the court on an urgent basis on April 6. The matter was expected to be heard on Tuesday but was postponed to May.

Police spokeswoman Mathapelo Peters said Gauteng provincial investigators were leading an “intelligence-driven operation” following the bomb threats last year.

“This has led to the identification and tracking of possible suspects‚ resulting in the confiscation of certain exhibits‚ which include computers‚” she said.

“Given our Constitutional mandate to ensure that citizens of the country are and feel safe and secure‚ Police will oppose this urgent application because it is in the best interest of the public‚” she said.
