Police manhunt for suspect after shootout at Monte Casino

Police have launched a manhunt for a suspect following a shootout between security and criminals at the Monte Casino in Fourways in Johannesburg.

Gauteng police spokesperson Brigadier Mathapelo Peters said security spotted a suspicious VW Caddy in the parking lot‚ and as they approached it‚ the van tried to drive off.

“They allegedly shot at the tyres of the van to force-stop it as the driver was speeding off‚” she said.

A shootout ensued and a security guard was shot and wounded‚ while two of the criminals were arrested. Peters said the driver managed to escape on foot and police have since launched a manhunt.

Police recovered five wheels of a 4x4 in the VW Caddy‚ with the two arrested suspects informing the police that they started at the Menlyn Centre in Pretoria‚ then Mall of Africa in Midrand‚ before they made their way to Monte Casino.

Peters said the two arrested suspects will appear in court soon on charges of attempted murder and possession of stolen property.

“The police are still investigating and following up on leads that may assist on the apprehension of the third suspect‚” Peters said.
