An armed gang of three men‚ dressed in police uniforms‚ emptied an SBV cash vehicle on the N4 in Pretoria north on Thursday morning.
The cash in transit vehicle was travelling from Rustenburg towards Pretoria when the guards suddenly heard a bang‚ said Lt-Col Kay Makhubela.
The driver stopped the van. It was unclear what caused the bang as there was no immediate evidence of an explosion on the scene.
“The guards say after the bang‚ they saw three men in police uniform outside and they were pointing firearms at them‚” Makhubela said.
“They were trying to open the door.”
The guards surrendered and got out of the vehicle‚ opening the doors to the gang which took cash and guns belonging to the guards.
It was unclear how much was taken.
“The gang got away in a vehicle with police markings‚” said Makhubela.
