Almost a year later‚ Zuma hasn’t responded to Kathrada’s call to step down: Motlanthe

It has been almost a year since anti-apartheid stalwart Ahmed Kathrada penned a letter to President Jacob Zuma‚ asking him to step down‚ but Zuma has yet to reply.

This was highlighted by former deputy president Kgalema Motlanthe on Wednesday at Kathrada’s funeral.

Motlanthe stirred the crowd when he read excerpts from Kathrada’s letter‚ dated March 31‚ 2016‚ adding: “His letter went without any formal reply…“

The mourners rose to their feet and erupted in applause and song‚ with others chanting “phansi Zuma‚ (down with Zuma).”

Some ANC delegates present at the funeral remained in their seats as mourners stood in applause.

Zuma was not present at the funeral‚ in accordance with the family’s wishes.

Instead‚ Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa was asked to lead the government delegation to the funeral.

Kathrada died on Tuesday‚ aged 87‚ after surgery to remove a clot on his brain.
