The Gauteng legislature’s oversight committee on community safety has quizzed Tshwane East policing cluster management on the situation in the Afrikaner enclave of Kleinfontein‚ where black police officers were allegedly not allowed in.

For over two decades the 800ha stretch of private-owned land where only Afrikaners are allowed to buy houses remained relatively unnoticed until the committee paid it a visit in 2013.

It emerged how the whites-only residents with an ambition to receive self-governing status‚ independent from South Africa‚ flew the old Transvaal flag‚ Die Vierkleur.

During the sitting of the committee in Atteridgeville‚ West of Pretoria‚ on Thursday committee member‚ Jacob Khawe‚ said four years ago an inquiry into Kleinfontein was launched and that there was evidence that black police officers had not been allowed into the enclave.

He said police officers looking for criminals there had to get permission from the settlement’s board‚ with people prevented from opening cases of domestic violence without first reporting to the board.

“That would be four years back. What is the situation now at Kleinfontein?” he asked.

East cluster commander‚ Brigadier Welcome Kweyama‚ said he was not ready to respond but that “some of the issues were rectified”.

He said “this one” needed a thorough response‚ electing to respond within seven days as stipulated by committee rules. — TMG Digital
