Mpumalanga ANC chairman David Mabuza is considering bringing EFF leader Julius Malema back into the governing party.
Mabuza, who is also premier of the province, said yesterday at the ANCYL provincial general council (PGC) in Mbombela that the ANC was weaker without Malema.
He also said he would not stand for another term as ANC provincial chairman and was ready to lead at national level.
The ANC holds its national conference in December when new leadership will be elected.
"You members of the ANCYL, go back to your branches and bring back members that have left the ANC.
"I myself am considering bringing Malema back into the ANC. I am following him, he might be talking too much, but it is better if he spoke like that in the ANC. When I bring him back you must welcome him," Mabuza said. He said he had not contacted Malema, who Sowetan could not reach before going to print. But last month Malema said Mabuza was a "kingmaker who never fails in his cause".
Ronald Lamola, who was deputy president of the ANCYL before Malema was sacked, yesterday welcomed Mabuza's call to bring back members of the EFF, including Malema.
Mabuza further gave an indication that he was ready to stand down as a provincial leader, saying it was time he handed over power to a younger person. Mabuza said he was doing this because he had noticed how African leaders overstayed their welcome.
"The ANC, since 2007 in Polokwane, and 2012 in Mangaung, has lost members, some formed Cope, I can see they are also fading," said Mabuza.
"I also belonged to another faction which supported the current president [Jacob Zuma] as I was a deputy chairperson of the province, while my chairperson comrade Thabang Makwetla was supporting [former] president Thabo Mbeki.
"These factions continued in 2012 in Mangaung, where, after the conference the EFF was formed.This means in each conference the ANC loses members.
"So this PGC must come out united with an understanding that we cannot let another group leave the ANC come the national conference.
"When I leave this province because I'm now 56 years old, young people must lead the ANC here. "This is my third term as ANC chairperson and I am not going for another term."
