City of Joburg officials set for court over theft

Nine City of Johannesburg cashiers will appear in the Commercial Crimes court on Thursday in connection with the theft of about R40 000‚ Mayor Herman Mashaba said.

The officials‚ employed at the Pioneer Park and Southern Suburbs swimming pools‚ were arrested on February 28. They are alleged to have pocketed cash payments made by residents using the facilities between January and December 2015.

The arrest came after an investigation by the city’s Anti-Corruption Unit‚ headed by General Shadrack Sibiya. An initial investigation had begun in November 2015‚ but up till now‚ had yielded few results‚ the mayor said. Further investigation was to continue.

“Last week I announced that the city had allocated R38-million in the 2016/17 adjustment budget for the Anti-Corruption Unit. The work that this team has produced without the required capacity is quite astonishing‚” the mayor said. He was looking forward to what could be achieved when the unit was working at full capacity.

“Corruption is public enemy number one in this city and we will not rest until corrupt officials are exposed‚ sent to jail and stolen money returned‚” Mashaba said.
