R5.1bn irregular SABC expenditure 'taken seriously' – acting CEO Aguma

Acting SABC CEO James Aguma has told parliament’s Standing Committee on Public Accounts that the issue of R5.1-billion in irregular expenditure incurred by the state broadcaster was being taken “extremely seriously”.

The 2015/2016 annual report was released late on Tuesday night and is under scrutiny as it follows on a number of controversies plaguing the institution.

“We take these matters extremely seriously‚ the matter of fruitless‚ wasteful and irregular expenditure‚” Aguma said‚ responding to a question from the Sopa chair Themba Godi.

“The mechanisms for identifying and reporting fruitless and wasteful expenditure that existed at the SABC were definitely weak‚” Aguma said.

Some had been remedied‚ some were a work in progress‚ he said.

Aguma said the figure of R5.1-billion for irregular expenditure needed to be placed in the correct context.

Scopa is today hearing a briefing on the finances at the SABC.

This is a developing story.
