Named and shamed: here are the streets where the top 100 water users live in Cape Town

These are the streets where the top 100 water guzzlers live in the drought-ravaged City of Cape Town which effectively has 121 days of usable water left.

While the average household uses roughly 20 000 litres of water a month – less than 1000 litres a day – the city’s top consumer in Haywood Road‚ Crawford ‚ used a staggering 702 000 litres in a month.

Dam levels in the city had dropped to 33% on Monday‚ 1.5% down from the previous week. With the last 10% of a dam’s water mostly not being useable‚ dam levels are effectively at 23%.

Collective daily water consumption in the city stands at 837 million litres a day‚ far exceeding a target of 700 million litres a day. At this drawn-down rate‚ there are effectively 121 days of useable water left.

“We may not have control over the weather‚ but we do have control over our use of potable water for non-essential purposes. Our actions can change the scenario‚” said mayor Patricia de Lille.

The city plans to publish the identities of residents or commercial properties once they have paid a fine or appeared in court for flouting water restrictions.
