Pretoria Protest: Police will not tolerate violence

Security forces have put measures in place to ensure that Friday’s anti-foreigner march is peaceful‚ says Brigadier Vishnu Naidoo.

Members of law enforcement will be deployed along the route and at the venue where memorandums are expected to be handed over. “Their mandate will be to maintain peace‚ safety and stability and to prevent crime‚” he said.

Urging protesters to march peacefully‚ he cautioned: “Those taking part should also note that the carrying of dangerous weapons is prohibited and those who decide to do so will likely face criminal prosecution“.

“While members of the security forces are urged to exercise maximum restraint while carrying out their duties‚ criminal behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.”

Brig Naidoo said any form of hate speech‚ intolerance or incitement to violence should be rejected by all sectors of society.

“The NATJOINTS also urges any person or group who feel that their rights have been infringed in any manner to report such at their nearest police station and not to take the law into their own hands.”
