Backers of presidential hopeful Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma are expected to notch up a runaway victory as the influential KwaZulu-Natal ANC Youth League begins its three-day elective conference at the Olive Convention Centre in Durban on Friday.

Provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabelo is expected to be retained in his powerful position‚ which he has used to promote Dlamini-Zuma’s presidential ambitions. Only one slate – that of Sabelo — is expected to emerge from the conference.

Sabelo‚ nominated by 11 regions‚ said the election of the top five office bearers would take place on Friday evening.

Deputy chairperson Kwazi Mshengu is likely be elected as the league’s provincial chair. The Mooi River-born Mshengu‚ chief of staff in the office of economic development MEC Sihle Zikalala – who is also ANC provincial chair – will replace Umvoti (Greytown) mayor Thami Ngubane‚ whose age now precludes him from contesting for the position.

Mshengu is likely to be replaced as deputy by Thembela Hlabangane‚ from Newcastle.

Some branches had nominated Ngubane and formed a new slate‚ but did not meet the necessary threshold. This leaves the door wide open for Sabelo’s slate to dominate.

Also not returning is Umdoni (Scottburgh) deputy mayor Sbongile Khathi‚ Sabelo’s deputy from the previous congress held in Port Shepstone in June 2015. Khathi will be replaced by Nomfundo Zwane who again will be the only woman in the top five. Kotini Nene‚ who was the league’s treasurer‚ is also not returning.

Nene is expected to be replaced by Veras Ncaphalala‚ the Far North regional secretary‚ who is based in Mtubatuba.

Sabelo confirmed his nomination on Friday‚ saying he was humbled by the ANCYL’s confidence in his leadership.

He said it was all systems go for the congress.

“We’re expecting 740 branches of the ANCYL‚ each sending two delegates. In all we are expecting 1 600 delegates. The conference starts officially at 2pm and we are dealing with registration this morning‚” said Sabelo.

ANCYL President Collin Maine will open the conference. Economic development MEC Zikalala will deliver the keynote address while KZN Premier Willies Mchunu will address the congress on its second day on Saturday.
