A woman and her 15-month-old daughter are missing and presumed drowned after being swept off a low-lying bridge by floodwaters near Harding on Wednesday night.

Parts of KwaZulu-Natal were hit by torrential rain and flash floods in the midst of a national drought.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said divers from the Search and Rescue Unit had been deployed to the Mafodobo River which lies on the border of the Eastern Cape.

“Yesterday evening the Port Shepstone Search and Rescue Unit received a report of a woman who was swept away by the river while carrying a child at Harding. Police are still searching for the missing persons‚” she said.

The search is expected to continue.
