The City of Johannesburg says it is making plans to get an emergency electricity source to people reliant on oxygen amid power outages in the Mayfair‚ Industria‚ Cleveland and Olifantsvlei substations.

Nico de Jager‚ the MMC for Environmental and Infrastructure Delivery Services‚ said in a statement that the outages being experienced by City Power were as a result of “damage to a feeder board due to fire at the Mayfair Substation“.

The fire damage resulted in a total black-out of all areas supplied from this substation.

The Olifantsvlei substation is out due to cable theft.

“Despite the unfavourable weather conditions we are currently experiencing‚ City Power officials have assessed the damage caused and have been working tirelessly to repair damaged equipment.

“I have requested that City Power provide mobile power stations to critical areas such as areas where residents are in need of electrically-powered oxygen machinery and City Power is currently engaging with Eskom to determine how these two utilities can work together to assist residents that draw power from Mayfair substation.

“The City apologises to residential and business customers for the inconvenience caused due to these power outages.”

Areas affected by the outage include Mayfair‚ Vrededorp‚ Tiger Brand‚ Milpark‚ Amalgam‚ Denver‚ Jeppe‚ Troyville and Kensington.
