Policeman shot dead in garage robbery

A Durban police officer was killed on Tuesday night after he and colleagues stumbled on a robbery at a petrol station.

Sources said the officer died at the scene‚ near the forecourt of the filling station on Edwin Swales Drive in the southern Bluff suburb. He died in a hail of bullets.

The name of the constable‚ stationed at Brighton Beach‚ has not yet been released.

After the shooting several suspects fled on foot in the direction of Clairwood as police officers gave chase.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane confirmed the officer had died at the scene.

“They had no idea the robbery was going on and the member was shot and killed. One suspect has been arrested‚” he said.
