Duarte takes dig at Pityana over job losses

ANC deputy secretary-general Jessie Duarte on Monday took a dig at one of the ruling party’s most vocal critics‚ Sipho Pityana.

In response to a Cosatu’s tweet about its affiliate‚ the National Union of Mineworkers‚ that said “NUM is deeply worried about retrenchments at Anglogold Ashanti https://shar.es/1Oj7vQ”‚ Duarte replied: “@–cosatu This is an opportunity for the chairman of Anglo Gold Ashanti to prove his Activism‚ stand up and fight for these jobs!”

“The NUM is going to meet with the company on Monday to seek avoidance measures. If no agreement is reached with the company on Monday we will resort to CCMA for facilitation‚” the union said.

“The NUM is extremely disappointed and perturbed that Anglogold Asanti is likely to retrench such a huge number of workers at the time when there is a high rate of unemployment in the country.”

Pityana‚ the chairman of the mining company’s board‚ in December used an address as the University of Cape Town council’s chairperson to say President Jacob Zuma and his government had failed students.

In August‚ he used his speech at the funeral of former Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile to lambaste the ANC‚ saying the “movement is in crisis and is tried beyond question”‚ and call for Zuma to leave office.

He is also part of the Save SA campaign and one of the more than 100 ANC stalwarts who signed a document called “For the Sake of the Country”‚ which lists concerns about the declining state of the party. – TMG Digital
