Sanral back in Parliament to explain R1.1-billion in irregular expenditure

The South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) will be back in Parliament on Tuesday after being rapped over the knuckles for failing to produce information it about irregular expenditure of more than R1-billion.

Two weeks ago‚ the agency was sent packing by the standing committee on public accounts (Scopa) for a “presentation (that) was vague‚ with no specific information” about irregular‚ fruitless and wasteful expenditure.

Scopa chair Themba Godi said at the time that the committee was “shocked at the apparent lack of preparation” and “the chairperson of the board and the management of Sanral could not give answers to the questions asked by members of the committee”.

He said the roads agency was instructed to gather all the necessary information‚ “including details of who is responsible for the irregular expenditure amounting to R1.1-billion and whether that amount has been recovered“.
