Nhleko asks Public Protector to investigate alleged R30 million payment

Police Minister Nathi Nhleko wants the Public Protector to investigate claims that he authorised a R30 million payment to a company‚ connected to a woman alleged to be his girlfriend.

At a media briefing on Tuesday about claims made in the City Press newspaper at the weekend‚ Nhleko said it was a “lie” that he had authorised a R30 million payment to Indoni‚ an NGO run by Nomcebo Mthembu.

He said that the police ministry had signed a memorandum of understanding with Indoni before his appointment as police minister.

In the wake of the xenophobic attacks in the country in 2015 and 2016‚ Indoni was chosen to run the “We are one humanity” campaign. Nhleko said this was based purely on the fact that an MOU was already in place with the NGO and they were based in KwaZulu-Natal where the majority of the attacks were taking place.

Nhleko said that the Civilian Secretariat for Police‚ whose funds he was alleged to have disbursed‚ did not even have that kind of money available at the time.

“At the time the xenophobic attacks flared up‚ there was only R1.5 million left in the budget. It goes without saying then that the CPS could not have paid R30 million as alleged in the media reports.”

Nhleko said he had written to the public protector to investigate the claims. He had also briefed President Jacob Zuma‚ he said.

Nhleko would not field questions about the nature of his relationship with Mthembu saying: “I’m not going to talk about that. My feelings are my feelings“.

Nhelko also dismissed claims that he was attempting to stop IPID head Robert McBride from returning to work at all costs.

In a series of vague answers to questions by the media‚ he said that he would not comment on the process or the withdrawal of charges against McBride‚ except to say that Parliament’s process would be followed.

He also said that people had “conveniently” forgotten about the 2010 rendition claims which McBride was accused of doctoring the investigation reports into.

Hao banna,do you think we are that stupid to beleive that she was offered the tender before you assume the office, how ironic.Right there one can see that there is a problem. When it comes to Mkwhebane,it is clear anc criminals are always gonna be running to her which is raising more questions than answers as to why all of a sudden they found comfort in the PP immediately after Thuli's departure.

Being an official working at supply chain management department under the best DA led municipality I will agree with Nhleko on this one, for each and every project the is a a certain budget amount allocated on the relevant vote number and the project number....the truth is if only R1.5M was left on that vote how possible it is that R30m tender was awarded...let us not be misled by some people who wants to see SA down graded base on lie forgetting that should it be like that not only ANC will suffer but all South Africans....please do some research before you comment first of all you guys know nothing about MFMA,DORA and Supply Chain Management Policy/Regulations.

Firstly, the dude cheats on his wife, and then cheats South Africa to benefit his girlfriend. These ANC cadres have no morals and no ethics. If he can cheat so easily on his wife, just like zuma and our sports ministers, they will just as easily cheat on South Africa and sell it out. Without even feeling guilty.

Don't worry Tpash, we will remove her. With the pace she is moving it wont be difficult to deal with her. At first we will need to complain to law bar regarding her professional conduct, she will be stripped off her practicing rights and left naked and then we attach her using our constitutional law that she cannot practice without being an advocate.
