‘Pens down events lead to reckless sexual encounters and other maladies’: KZN education MEC

The Department of Education in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday warned learners of the perils of “pens down events” held to “celebrate the end of exams or the writing of the last big paper for the year”.

It described them as an “undesirable practice” and said the festivities “always involve usage of drugs and abuse of alcohol‚ which leads to things like reckless sexual encounters and other maladies”.

“In the past‚ these celebrations have led to death of some learners‚” a statement said.

Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwane said: “It does not make sense for a learner to spend 12 years in the system only to lose his or her life after writing the final paper‚ thus cutting his or her future short.

“Finishing Grade 12 is not the destination‚ but it should signal the beginning of a brighter future for any learner.”

Dlungwane also urged to monitor their children’s whereabouts during this time.

He also pleaded with learners to refrain from the practice of destroying their school uniforms‚ and said these should rather be given “to other needy learners who will make good use of the uniform”.
