Reports have surfaced on Sunday about the possible withdrawal of charges by the National Prosecuting Authority against Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan.

The City Press is reporting that informal discussions have begun between National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP) Shaun Abrahams‚ Gordhan’s lawyers and his two co-accused to drop the charges against them.

The newspaper reported that a draft letter had been compiled by Abrahams’ office detailing his plan to drop the charges.

It is expected that the letter will be sent to Gordhan’s lawyers and his former deputies at the SA Revenue Service‚ Oupa Magashula and Ivan Pillay‚ before they appear in court on Wednesday.

The rand plunged and bonds slumped after Gordhan was summoned to appear in court. He was charged with fraud against the backdrop of a battle that has pitted the finance minister against state-owned companies accused of mismanagement and corruption.

Thousands are expected to gather in Tshwane on Wednesday when Gordhan appears in court as the minister has gathered support from the African National Congress‚ its stalwarts and other prominent leaders in society.

The Economic Freedom Fighters have planned a huge march in Pretoria on that day. If the NPA goes ahead and brings Gordhan to court‚ it is expected that the move would have severe consequences for the country both politically and economically.
