Police on Thursday declined to comment on allegations that the 14-month-old baby abducted from his Protea Glen‚ Soweto home was taken by the brother of the child’s father’s ex-girlfriend.
Siya Mlambo was snatched on Tuesday night after two men followed his mother‚ Mandisa Mlambo‚ home‚ then tied her and a nanny up with rope before robbing them of cellphones and valuables.
She told reporters on Wednesday that one of the suspects who attacked them told her that her “actions were the reason for all that was happening” to them.
“He said to me that my relationship with Thabo (Siya’s father) has made his sister suicidal and for that I should pay. He told me that my baby or I should die for this‚” Mandisa said.
Police spokesman Mpande Khoza told TMG Digital: “That’s her own statement she gave to the media. I cannot comment on it because‚ as it stands‚ we don’t have that information‚ therefore we can not say we are investigating anyone based on her media comments.”
Khoza added that no arrests have yet been made and investigations are still underway.
“Crime Intelligence and local detectives have asked that we give them a bit of time to follow leads we have given them. At this point we did not make any arrests or interviewed any suspect in particular but we are hoping to do so soon‚” Khoza said.
The baby’s father told TMG Digital that he had unable to eat or go to work since Siya was abducted.
“I can’t do anything. I can’t eat or even think of anything else. I am so heartbroken. If anyone has an agenda against me they should have just killed me instead‚ and leave my son out of it. He is young. He can’t even talk‚” Thabo said. – TMG Digital
