Health Ombud to release report of probe into the deaths of psychiatric patients next month

Findings of the investigation into the deaths of 37 psychiatric patients‚ who died after being transferred from Life Esidimeni into the care of NGOs earlier this year‚ will be released next month.

This is according to Health Ombudsman Professor Malegapuru Makgoba‚ who on Thursday told TMG Digital that his investigation is ongoing.

He would not be drawn into details of the investigation or how far he is with it.

“I will release a report at the end of November. I will not give an update on the investigation.

“If there is something to share‚ I will let people know‚” Makgoba said.

In September‚ Makgoba announced he had constituted a team of four independent psychiatric experts and one expert in public health to assist with the investigation.

The investigation will focus on quality management and care of the patients concerned‚ based on clinical records and any other information relevant to the matter.

On Thursday morning‚ families of the patients held a prayer vigil outside Gauteng Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu’s offices.
