Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students have regrouped following a relatively quiet weekend for Fees Must Fall protests.
A group of protesting students blocked the entrance to the main campus before moving to Soshanguve’s North Campus on Monday morning.
The students blocked the entrance with rocks‚ burning tyres and dustbins‚ and reportedly threatened a massive shutdown.
It is understood that the students are protesting against a claimed 8% fee hike for 2017 and the increased presence of “bouncers” on campus.
The university’s spokeswoman‚ Willa de Ruyter‚ was not immediately available for comment but reportedly dismissed claims of an 8% fee increase to be announced by management.
“The situation at TUT campuses is mostly calm expect for Soshanguve campus. We are aware of protests that have been going on throughout the weekend and we are monitoring that situation‚” she told 702.
