A 44-year-old woman who was arrested while allegedly paying a hitman to kill her spouse in Cape Town was granted bail of R30 000 on Monday.

Petina Coetzee‚ from the suburb of Kenilworth‚ was arrested last week during a sting operation in the parking lot at the Lansdowne railway station.

The state did not oppose her bail application at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

She is facing charges of conspiracy to murder her retired husband‚ Austin Coetzee‚ 66. Family attorney Geoff Carter told The Times earlier that Austin – who previously worked for petroleum company Engen — was traumatised by news of the alleged hit. “As far as I am concerned‚ they had a very good marriage‚” said Carter.

Petina was caught handing an undisclosed sum of cash to an alleged hitman by members of the Provincial Detectives Unit and the Manenberg Serious and Violent Crimes Investigation Unit.

Her bail conditions are that she remains in Elsies River and reports to the local police station twice a day‚ at 8am and 8pm. She had to surrender her passport and must seek permission if she wants to leave town.

The case will resume on December 2. – TMG Digital
