The University of the Witwatersrand’s Student Representative (SRC) called for a mass meeting outside the Great Hall on Friday‚ a day after at least four students had to be treated for rubber bullet wounds.
Among them was former SRC president Shaeera Kalla‚ who was said to have been shot up to 13 times in the back at close range‚ and student leader Busisiwe Seabe‚ who suffered breathing problems.
Wits Economic Freedom Fighters student leader Vuyani Pambo was also arrested and then released during a student march in Braamfontein on Thursday.
The SRC tweeted that: “The police went to both Catherine & Shaeera at the Emergency sections of the hospital-demanding statements from them. #WitsPoliceBrutality”
Seabe also goes by the name Catherine.
Kalla took to Facebook after the shooting to say “thanks for all the messages‚ calls‚ tweets‚ prayers and more that I have received today”.
She said she had been “with a group of students (who) were peacefully protesting on West Campus when police once again unleashed violence on us”.
“I was shot 13 times in the back‚ at a very close range in a targeted attack on students. I am currently in hospital and I will have to stay in according to the doctors‚” Kalla said.
“I have heard of other comrades assisting an injured student and being told by the police to leave her or face being shot at by rubber bullet. Comrade Busisiwe Seabe who helped me to get away after the first few shots‚ is also in hospital as you all know.”
Police spokesperson Brigadier Sally de Beer said allegations that police had use undue force will be the subject of an Independent Police Investigative Directorate probe.
The university said on Thursday that the injuries came after protesting students had entered the Flower Hall where they had torn up test papers towards the end of a chemical engineering test just after midday.
“They then made their way to the New Commerce Building where they disrupted lectures before making their way to the Wits Science Stadium. Police dispersed the protesting group using teargas‚ rubber bullets and stun grenades.”
The university said students had jumped on a lapse in security around these venues in the morning.
