A woman‚ believed to be a staff member‚ has collapsed after teargas was sprayed at students walking along University Way on the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) campus on Wednesday morning.

The situation at university was starting to intensify following a relatively calm start to the day.

NMMU turned into a war zone on Tuesday as a standoff ensued between police and protesting students.

Teargas‚ stun grenades and rubber bullets were used to disperse the students.

Police were met with students pelting their vehicles with stones.

Wednesday’s drama unfolded just after 6am when the protesting students blockaded the entrance to the south campus with rocks‚ beds and dustbins.

NMMU Fees Must Fall member Thandeka Tshabalala said on Wednesday morning that police “continued to antagonise us”.

“We were walking and singing and they sprayed us with water and chased us into bushes‚” she said.

The woman reportedly collapsed after being tear gassed.
