The court case of Fees Must Fall protest leader and former university of Witwatersrand SRC president Mcebo Dlamini has attracted the attention of some high-profile figures.

Dlamini will continue his bail application in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court after spending two nights at the Cleveland police holding cells.

His court appearance on Monday saw the attendance of Fees Must Fall supporter‚ poet and university professor Pitika Ntuli and Anglican Bishop of Pretoria Jo Seoka.

Joining Ntuli on Tuesday was joined by television personality Jeffery Sekele‚ who‚ along with large number of students‚ occupied benches in the public gallery in solidarity.

There was a huge police presence – including members of the Tactical Response outside and inside court. Two Nyalas and a number of police vans were parked on Ntemi Piliso Street.

There were no protests outside court in the morning and it appeared peaceful.

Clad in navy blue Puma tracksuits with a black and white scarf over his shoulders‚ Dlamini appeared composed on Tuesday morning.

Dlamini appeared in high spirits and he was chatty shortly before a court official asked him to keep quiet.

 He had told reporters: “I am happy I got arrested and not any of the other students. The struggle continues. It’s not just about us it’s for the next generation so the struggle continues. It only just begun.”

His lawyer Mongezi Ntanga said Dlamini is charged with four criminal chargers including public violence‚ theft‚ being in possession of dangerous weapons and assault.

Dlamini will apply for bail on Tuesday on the basis that he has to write his exams. – TMG Digital
