Motorists have been urged to exercise extra caution on the roads as rainfall is expected in a parched Gauteng on Tuesday.

The South African Weather Service said there is a 60% chance of rain – including scattered thunder showers — in parts of the country during the day.

Joburg metro police spokesman Wayne Minaar asked drivers to exercise extra care: “Motorists should drive with caution. They should increase visibility and decrease their speed as roads will be slippery. Motorists are urged to drive with their headlights on.”

“It has already started drizzling in parts of the Western Cape and the Northern Cape at the moment. Thunder showers are expected to spread across the Free State‚ Gauteng‚ Limpopo and Mpumalanga during the day‚” a forecaster said.

“We are expecting a cloudy condition with 30% chance of rain in the northern parts of the country and at least 60% chance of rain the southern parts of the country in the afternoon.”

She added that over 60% rain is expected in parts of Gauteng on Tuesday.
