Police arrest fashion lensman for rapes

Tshwane police pounced on an fashion photographer who allegedly lured young women wanting to become models to his flat where he allegedly raped them.

Captain Augustinah Selepe confirmed the arrest of the man.

"The suspect has been charged with two counts of rape," said Selepe.

It was not yet clear if the accused had made his first appearance in court, but police arrested him on Saturday.

The arrests came after two women opened cases at the Pretoria central police station.

Lehlohonolo Maphelela, an advocate, assisted the women to open cases after he was approached by a friend of one of them.

Maphelela said six more young women were speaking to him about being sexually violated by the lensman.

The youngest of the girls that spoke to Maphelela is 14 years of age.

The man would apparently meet the models at a public place for a photo shoot, said Maphelela.

"After that shoot he'd say 'I want to do a private shoot, let's go to my flat'.

"When they get to the flat he gives them a dress to put on," said Maphelela.

"When they get to the bedroom [to wear the dress] he touches and kiss[es] them, then force[s] himself [on them]."

A friend of one of the girls who opened a case took to Facebook after the suspect's arrest to call for more victims to come out.
