Cashier arrested for skimming customers’ bank cards

A 24-year-old restaurant cashier has been arrested by the Hawks in Hopefield in the Western Cape for allegedly using an illegal point of sale device to skim customers’ bank cards.

The arrest on Thursday afternoon followed several complaints in the past two months from victims who had suffered substantial financial losses after visiting the restaurant‚ Hawks spokesman Captain Lloyd Ramovha said.

“The resultant probe by the Commercial wing of the Hawks‚ resulted in the arrest of a Zimbabwean National‚ believed to be responsible for the alleged illicit operationm: he added.

“One unauthorised point of sale device was found in the suspect’s possession as well as two bank cards with questionable authenticity.

“The suspect is expected to appear in the Hopefield Magistrate’s Court on Friday‚ to answer to allegations in contravention of the Electronic Communication Act‚” Ramovha said.
