University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) management expect all campuses to be open for lectures on Monday.

However‚ late on Sunday afternoon‚ students in Pietermaritzburg met to take a decision on whether to protest following last week’s violent strike action.

A student‚ who did not want to be named‚ said the meeting was called to “conscientise those who did not want to protest”.

The organisers of the meeting‚ who posted the notice of it on the UKZN Fees Must Fall Facebook page‚ could not be reached for comment.

UKZN student representative council (SRC) secretary-general Simiso Memela was aware of the meeting‚ but had yet to confirm whether the SRC in Pietermaritzburg was behind it.

“As far as I am aware‚ all campuses are open but there is still this commotion in Pietermaritzburg and now students are meeting to decide if they should protest‚” he said.

Memela said the SRC could not dictate to students.

“We had informed the students that council was aware of our issues and that we have to wait until October 14 to hear solutions but they want to protest. We cannot say to them that they cannot. All we can do is give them the correct information for them to make an informed decision‚” he said.

Meanwhile‚ a group of students is trying to raise funds for the 11 who were arrested during last week’s violent protests in Pietermaritzburg.

Ntobeko Nzimande said the donations would fund food and bail.

“It is a student-led initiative. On Saturday‚ our leaders visited six male students in New Prison and the five females in Westville to hand over toiletries and food.”
