Nine UKZN students in court as protesters block road

Nine University of KwaZulu-Natal students who were arrested for public violence at the campus following running battles with police on Thursday are set to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Dozens of students have gathered at court in solidarity with the arrested students.

Students demanding no fee increases initially holed themselves inside the residence from where they pelted the police with bricks and sprayed water from fire hoses. Police retaliated by firing rubber bullets‚ stun-grenades and teargas.

On Friday morning‚ some students blocked the turnstiles to the Malherbe residence with tables and blocked the King Edward Street with appliances and metal.

Police were called in to monitor as students were also reportedly throwing rocks onto the street.
