NMMU students protest outside court

A group of about 60 students protested outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court where nine Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University students were expected to appear on Thursday.

Initial reports said eight students had been arrested‚ but that number has since risen.

The nine students – six women and three men – were arrested on Wednesday of charges of contravening the National Road Traffic Act and public disturbance.

One of the students faces an additional charge of obstructing the police in the execution of their duties.

The students were granted bail of R50 late on Wednesday night and were expected to appear in court on Thursday.

A crowd of supporters gathered outside the Humewood police station where the students had been held.
