The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and South African Communist Party (SACP) said on Wednesday they would seek to ally with students to take the battle over tuition costs to the rich and private capital. And away from the state.
The organisations would consult with and seek to join student formations in order to march on the Chamber of Mines and “other centres of private capital” on October 14‚ Cosatu general secretary Bheki Ntshalintshali said during a briefing in Johannesburg.
Several South African universities remained shut on Wednesday due to student protests since Monday over 2017 tuition costs. The Department of Higher Education and Training announced on Monday that fees would be capped at 8% with individual institutions to determine increases‚ and promised support for poorer students.
“The SACP and Cosatu are calling for a decisively progressive or graduated tax on the rich and wealthy to finance education as an apex priority. We are calling on the state to move forward and introduce this direly needed tax reform‚” Ntshalintshali said.
Cosatu and the SACP have been meeting since Tuesday to discuss issues confronting the tripartite alliance.
A joint announcement of the results of the meeting‚ where the ANC succession battle is among the topics‚ is expected later on Wednesday.
