Protect yourself from prying eyes: Tape up your laptop’s webcam

Cover the webcam on your laptop with a piece of tape or run the risk of being unwittingly filmed with your pants down.

Covering cameras to protect yourself from prying eyes should be as routine as locking doors at night and switching on your home alarm‚ says the head of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation‚ James Comey.

“There’s some sensible things you should be doing‚ and that’s one of them‚” Comey told a conference at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Activists concerned about privacy have long resorted to taping over computer cameras – a tool that can be hijacked by hackers to gather sensitive or even compromising images – and been teased about being paranoid.

Comey‚ however‚ says that it is a sensible thing to do in an age of cyber-snooping.

“You go into any government office and we all have the little camera things that sit on top of the screen. They all have a little lid that closes down on them. You do that so that people who don’t have authority don’t look at you.

“I think that’s a good thing‚” he was quoted as saying by US political newspaper and online news portal The Hill.
