South Africa’s former deputy president Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says the country is facing a crisis.

“I agree with everybody that as a country we are at a crossroad‚” she said in a video interview‚ primarily about her work at the United Nations (UN)‚ broadcast online by Eyewitness News on Monday.

Mlambo-Ngcuka‚ who is now the executive director of UN Women‚ was speaking about the role of leadership‚ from the perspective of having previously occupied a leadership position.

She said it was important for leaders to “earn and to sustain the trust that the people have in you”.

“And when people doubt you‚ it obviously is a crisis and I think that this is what we have now‚ in South Africa‚” Mlambo-Ngcuka added.

“I would like to see more women‚ standing up‚ in this space to provide leadership with integrity. Leadership that people can trust. Leadership that doesn’t steal‚ leadership that respects the rights of women‚ leadership that condemns and acts against rape and rape culture.” – TMG Digital
