If you’re innocent‚ there’s nothing they can do to you – EFF to Gordhan

Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan’s refusal to report to the Hawks office‚ as requested‚ will be to “act with the same disrespect” shown by President Jacob Zuma and his “faction” of the state‚ the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said on Thursday.

The party called on Gordhan to rethink his position and present himself to the Hawks.

“If he is innocent‚ which we believe he is‚ there is nothing the Hawks can do‚” national spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said.

“The last thing we need is anyone being treated as if they are above the law. At all times‚ we ought to respect institutions of the state and uphold them above individuals who may be at their helm.”

Gordhan received a letter from the Hawks on Monday‚ demanding that he present himself to provide the unit with a warning statement — implying that he is a suspect and that he could be arrested.

Earlier on Wednesday‚ Gordhan said he would not present himself to the Hawks due to legal reasons and other commitments.

The EFF said the “unrelenting pursuit of criminalising” Gordhan did not justify not cooperating with the Hawks.
