The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has objected to African National Congress (ANC) councillor Dan Bovu being sworn in at the Johannesburg sitting on Monday‚ because it had opened corruption charges against him.

The EFF on Sunday alleged that Bovu had tried to bribe its Johannesburg councillors to vote for the ANC during the first sitting where a mayor would be elected.

Bovu has denied meeting with any EFF councillors or offering a bribe. He said he would open a case of defamation.

An EFF councillor on Monday said the party would not allow the council sitting to proceed if Bovu‚ whom he called a “wanted criminal“‚ was sworn in.

“The police are outside... corruption is a serious crime‚” the councillor said.

He read out the case number of the matter opened against Bovu.

Johannesburg city manager Trevor Fowler said this was a matter for the court and that Bovu was innocent until proven guilty.

Proceedings had to proceed as required by the legislation.

The ANC and Democratic Alliance (DA) will battle it out for the City of Johannesburg at Monday’s sitting.

The ANC has 121 seats and the DA 104.

With the EFF vote‚ which has 30 seats‚ and that of several smaller parties‚ the DA is set to take over the metro.

The EFF announced that it would not enter into coalitions with any parties but had agreed to vote with opposition parties to form councils. The party‚ however‚ has made an urgent appeal to the DA not to nominate Herman Mashaba as the mayor. – TMG Digital/BDlive
