Danny Jordaan has decided after two failed attempts that third time is not lucky and is not standing for a place at Fifa’s high table.
The South African Football Association president‚ who has kept a low press profile since US court revelations that South African officials were involved in bribery efforts around the hosting of the 2010 World Cup‚ long held out the ambition of a place on the executive committee of world football’s governing body.
But he lost a bid to win a spot on the Fifa exco in 2011 and has not submitted his candidacy for the newest opportunity as the Confederation of African Football elects two extra members to an expanded new-look Fifa Council.
The two seats will be voted for by member associations at the CAF Congress in Cairo on September 27. The candidates must still pass integrity checks but are Kabele Camara (Guinea)‚ Hamidou Djibrilla (Niger)‚ Kwesi Nyantankyi (Ghana)‚ Augustin Senghor (Senegal)‚ Suketu Patel (Seychelles)‚ Chabur Goc Alei (South Sudan) and Ahmad (Madagascar)‚ Caf said on Friday.
Creating the council and giving World Cup hosting votes to all members are among Fifa reforms agreed in recent rounds of changes in Zurich provoked by bribery scandals at the global body.
Another reform is a guaranteed council seat for a woman from each of the Fifa’s six continental confederations.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino will chair a first session of the expanded 37-member panel on October 13 to 14 in Zurich but Jordaan has seemingly put a full stop behind his ambitions.
He was handed embarrassing setbacks in his previous elections.
In 2011 the SAFA boss stood for both the Caf and Fifa executive committee elections but withdrew from the Caf election against Kalusha Bwalya of Zambia in a tactical move he thought would help his bid for the Fifa post. But it backfired as Jordaan received 10 votes from the 53 national members who make up Caf and was handsomely beaten.
In 2013 Jordaan tried to get on the Caf committee again but was beaten by the unknown Madagascar’s Ahmad.
